ALICE IN WONDERLAND
A few Tuesdays ago, I finally got to catch Alice In Wonderland in 3-D. Haven't exactly been going to the cinema to catch movies but this movie is a MUST because it's in 3-D. Plus, it's directed by Tim Burton plus Johnny Depp is acting in it, so definitely a must see for me. I love Tim Burton's films by the way. Johnny Depp is also a great actor, he inspires me to be a better actress. Oh and Helena Bonham Carter too! She's just an amazing actress. Anne Hathaway was also acting so it would probably be a visual treat since she's gorgeous. She's not an amazing an actress as Helena Bonham Carter so I didn't really expect much. Anyway, I've been waiting to see the movie for over a year. The first time I heard it was coming out was around April or something? Yes, 2009. It's pretty long isn't it? So, when it came to local cinemas, I knew I HAD TO GO. Thank goodness for Ami. Yes, Chin Ming ps-ed her. And Ati was going with Ellysa and Izzaty so just the two of us. Eve watched it on the day it was released. -.-''' I think we watched it around a week after it's release? And the cinemas were all pretty packed. Wanted to book at Lot One but doubting the seats and 3D. Plus, Ami was working and she could only reach by 7 or so. Therefore, the nearest to her working place was Vivo. And I checked Vivo but.... It was a Sunday when I checked.. And lots of seats were already taken. GREAT. So, since I'm used to going to Cathay and I usually end up watching movies at Cathay Cineplexes, I checked out Cathay. Not so bad plus I like their 3D glasses. LOL. (Causeway Point also Cathay so yeah. You probably know why I trust Cathay.) (Plus, The Cathay used to be my hangout.) Okay. So the movie is DEFINITELY POPULAR. Crazy I tell you. Just before I left my house, I checked and there were still some seats but when I reached, I saw the available seats were in the first 3 rows. Before, I left, there were 5 rows or something. Unbelievable. So, the movie is about Alice returning to Wonderland after many many years. In the movie, Alice is 19 years old living in world where there are proper manners and is forced to attend a formal party where she encounters a marriage proposal. Alice is confused and does not know how to answer to it hence she ends up running away to think and ended up chasing a rabbit down a hole. She finds herself returning to Wonderland, a place which she thought was a dream. Now, Alice learns of her true destiny in Wonderland but is hesitant because she still thinks it is a dream. Well, I guess, if you've watched the 1999 Alice In Wonderland film, you could feel some sort of relation to the movie. In the 1999 movie, Alice has stage fright which she eventually overcomes with the help of the creatures in Wonderland. The 2010 movie was brilliant especially in graphics but I think that it wasn't exactly the best Tim Burton movie. The plot was okay because it was meant to be a story but certain parts were very draggy and boring. Plus, you expect certain things to happen like Alice killing the jabberwock because it was foretold. Acting was also okay. The one who really stole the show to me was the Red Queen played by Helena Bonham Carter. There's just something about her. Her short character with an enormous head really makes you think about a toddler and their demands. The way she shouts, "Off with their heads!" reminds me of a tantrum. Oh and I do love her make-up, the red lips in fact. Johnny Depp was okay though. Yes, he's the Mad Hatter. The movie was more about him than Alice for some reason. Well, then again... He is the reason why most people watch the movie anyway. Wasn't exactly his best performance to me. I still think that he was much better when acting as Edward Scissorhands. Anne Hathaway as the White Queen was also another okay character. Watching her act as the White Queen was fun. She seems a little bit loony to me. One thing for sure, I don't really like her make-up. They should have given her some light pink colour lips or some pale white lips. And her eyebrows are distracting. ): Acting was okay though. I don't really think she is suitable for the role. Plus, she appears mostly in chick flicks such as Bride Wars so, it was kind of strange seeing her in a Tim Burton film. Alice was played by Mia Wasikowska. She's a newcomer. An Australian actress. She looks rather pale in the entire movie. Her acting was not bad. Pretty good actually. I was impressed but her pale skin was distracting. Maybe the fact that Johnny Depp got more screen time actually allowed me to appreciate her character more. Crispin Glover as the knave of hearts Creepy Thin Man from the Charlie's Angel movies. He's acting as the knave which I guess suits his rather freakish kind of look. I don't know why but he suits these kind of roles. His attempt in seducing Alice was rather funny to watch. I guess it's because it he was moving awkwardly which is... pretty natural for him. I mean, I've watched him in Charlie's Angel and Willard so it was fine with me. And anyway, the Knave isn't exactly the most likable character or seducer. The movie seems to be pretty feminist to me. Especially with the fact that it is set in the Victorian era. Alice is really different from most girls in that age and I could say that her self-confidence is really inspiring. I loved how she ended up rejecting the proposal in the end. Then again, if you've done research, you would know that Linda Woolverton is one of the screen writers and she did write Mulan, Beauty And The Beast, Lion King... So, the feminist thing was pretty expected. I would say it's a MUST WATCH for Tim Burton's fans and young girls. Not exactly a chick flick but inspiring. Not the best Tim Burton film, but acceptable. Don't bother watching it in 3D. Not much effects anyway. 3D glasses FTW! :D
